Head Coach - Brad Schaupeter (


Brad Schaupeter has been coaching sailing since 1996 and working with sailors of all ages and levels throughout the country. He graduated from Indiana University in 2001 as a founding member of the sailing team and has run sailing and racing programs at Detroit Yacht Club (1996-2002), Alamitos Bay Yacht Club (Long Beach, CA: 2003-2011), Corona Del Mar High School (2007-2008), Mira Costa High School (2010), Cal State Long Beach University (2011), Santa Barbara Yacht Club (2011-present), and UC Santa Barbara (2011-present).  


Haydon Stapleton

Haydon Stapleton is an alumni of the UCSB sailing team and the newest addition to our coaching staff. In his time with the team Haydon represented the Gauchos in seven conference championships, and five separate national championships, both as a skipper and a crew. He also was recognized as both an all conference skipper and crew. Outside of college sailing Haydon is a three time North American Champion in the Day Sailer and El Toro fleets, as well as a winner of the Rolex Big Boat Series.  

Willie McBride


Willie McBride is an alumni of the UCSB Sailing Team and came on as part of the UCSB coaching staff in the fall of 2015.  Growing up in Santa Barbara, California, he had an impressive junior sailing career primarily in 29er's.  While attending college at UCSB, he worked as the director of the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation just prior to beginning his pursuit of a 49er Olympic campaign.  He is currently a US Sailing Olympic coach in addition to working with the Gauchos. Some of Willie's many accomplishments include: 

  • 2013 Melges 20 European Championship - 1st place

  • 2008 29er US Youth Championship - 1st place 


Rob Grant


Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Rob Grant began teaching for the Santa Barbara Youth Sailing Foundation while still in high school. He qualified for his first junior national championship at the age of 15 and has sailed competitively in numerous one design classes and measurement rule events ever since. Rob spent four years as the Racing Editor at Latitude 38 Magazine, and was recently named the Santa Barbara Yacht Club’s Outstanding Male Crewmember of 2015.
